Pembina Pipeline continues oil spill containment

Booms in place, crews begin shoreline clean-up

CALGARY, June 17 /CNW/ - Pembina Pipeline Corporation (Pembina) personnel
continue containment activities related to a release of sweet crude oil from a
pipeline river crossing of the Red Deer River (LSD 12-26-33-5-W5),
approximately five kilometres north of Sundre.
Crews have placed and are maintaining booms where the river enters the
west end of Glennifer Lake and near the dam at the east end. Teams are
removing oil from the absorbent pads on the booms and have begun the clean-up
of oily sheen and debris on the shoreline. In addition, Pembina has mobilized
airboats and helicopters on the river between the release site and the
entrance to Glennifer Lake to identify and begin recovery of small isolated
hydrocarbon accumulations.
Pembina staff continue to work closely with the Alberta Energy Resources
Conservation Board (ERCB), Alberta Environment, the Alberta Emergency
Management Agency and response specialists from the Western Canadian Spill
Services Co-operative. It is estimated that 75-125 barrels of light sweet
crude oil was released before the pipeline leak was isolated and the flow
stopped on Sunday night.
Pembina and various regulatory personnel are contacting landowners
between the pipeline crossing and Glennifer Lake. Pembina has arranged for an
alternative water supply for the Carefree Resort and the Glennifer Lake Resort
which ordinarily draw water from the lake. As well, Pembina personnel are
working with the David Thompson Health Region regarding water quality testing,
and water samples from both the river and lake are being analyzed.
The cause of the break is under investigation but high water levels
prevent inspection of the pipeline at this time. An internal inspection
conducted in January 2008 did not detect any issues on this pipeline.
Pembina will continue to provide regular updates as the containment and
assessment activities progress.
